Introduction

Benchmark Asset Management Company Pvt Ltd. (BAMC) is a SEBI registered Asset Management Company launched in June 2001. BAMC is an asset management company in India with primary focus on indexing. While the concept of Index Fund is very much popular in foreign countries, it is yet to take off in the Indian Market.

Benchmark AMC is India's first firm to focus on passive and quantitative asset management business.[1]

In 2001, Benchmark became the first company to Launch ETFs (exchange-traded funds) in India - Nifty BeES which was listed on the Nifty for trade.[2] This scheme is the first ETF in India based on the Nifty Index and is the oldest and largest at this point in time.[3]

It had also launched the first liquid ETF in the world - Liquid BeES. In 2002, BAMC had filed offer document of Gold ETF with SEBI [4] and in 2007, Benchmark became the first to envisage Gold exchange-traded fund in the world. [5] In 2009, Benchmark Asset Management Company also became the first ones to launch the Shariah-complaint ETF which enables millions of Muslims and other investors to participate in the stock market.[6]

On 8 July 2009, Benchmark Nifty BeES which consists of top 50 stocks and tracks CNX Nifty Index recorded the highest ever volume on Budget Day with over a million units traded in single day amounting to more than Rs. 46 Cr.[7]

Benchmark Milestones

In 2005, Benchmark won an award for their ETF - Liquid BeES in the Global ETF Awards.[8] Nifty BeES has been awarded the "Best Performing Mutual Fund" of the Year in the index fund category at the CNBC-TV18-CRISIL Mutual Fund Awards in 2007 & 2008 [9] BAMC has been ranked as the "Best Provider of Structured Products" in their Private Banking Poll 2006, by Euromoney [10]
